Deportivo has changed its name

0
The Spanish football club Deportivo has made a historic decision, finally changing its official name. From now on, the club abandons the Spanish spelling of the name of the city and will use exclusively the Galician version. AS reports, the previous name of Deportivo La Coruña (Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña) is a thing of the past. The new official name of the team is Deportivo A Coruña (Real Club Deportivo de A Coruña). These changes will also be reflected on the club's official emblem, where the old name will be replaced by the new one. The management made the fateful decision based on the opinion of their fans. On June 23, the club announced the results of a special vote among fans, in which the absolute majority - 79.41% of participants - supported the name change. The main reason for such a step is the linguistic and cultural identity of the region. In Spanish, the city is called La Coruña, while historically it is A Coruña in the local Galician language. It's worth noting that various Deportivo fan associations have been calling for this renaming for years to better reflect the club's roots. As a reminder, Deportivo is one of the most unique and romantic football clubs in Spain. In the 90s and early 2000s, this team from Galicia received the iconic nickname Super Depor. They have successfully challenged giants such as Real Madrid and Barcelona and become a symbol of how a humble club can dominate the domestic and European arenas through smart management and brilliant scouting. In the 1999/00 season they won the Spanish championship and in the 2003/04 campaign they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. Then, at the quarter-final stage, the team created one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the tournament: after a crushing loss to reigning trophy holders Milan away (1-4), Deportivo destroyed the Italians in their native Riasora with a score of 4-0.
