Central striker Patrik Schick announced on his Instagram page that he is retiring from the Czech national team. The Czech national team won the 2026 World Cup selection playoff and returned to the World Cup after 20 years away from it. Miroslav Koubek's side crashed out of the group stage, finishing fourth with one point in Quartet A, joined by Mexico, South Africa and South Korea. After the unsuccessful performance of the Czech national team, Schick decided to say goodbye to it. "Today is the end of my history in the national team. This decision is not impulsive and did not appear suddenly. I have been harboring this thought for a long time and thought about my decision for a long time. It was a path full of emotions, joy, disappointments, victories and difficult moments. I always tried to give my best in the national team and represent our country as best as possible. I am leaving with pride for what I have achieved in the national team shirt. At the same time, I am left with the feeling that Czech football can offer much, much more than it has shown in recent years. You need to face the truth and change a lot of things that have not been working for a long time. I don't say this out of anger or frustration. I say this because I care about Czech football. Thanks to all the fans, teammates and people who have supported me all this time. It was an honor for me to wear the shirt of the Czech national team," wrote the 30-year-old representative of Bayer Leverkusen. Patrik made an impressive debut for the Czech national team in May 2016, scoring a goal and an assist in a 6-0 friendly against Malta in Austria after coming off the bench. During Euro-2020 (2021), the centre-forward scored five goals in five matches, giving up the title of the best scorer of the tournament to his Portuguese colleague Cristiano Ronaldo. In total, Shyk played 56 matches for the Czech national team, scoring 26 goals and six assists.
