The Korean national team could not overcome the group stage of the tournament. The team started the championship with a victory over the Czech Republic (2:1), but lost to Mexico (0:1) and South Africa (0:1) in the next two matches. With three points, South Korea finished third in Group A and ended their World Cup campaign.
The 57-year-old specialist led the national team from July 2024. His contract was until the Asian Cup, but after a poor performance at the World Cup, Myung-bo Hong decided to take responsibility for the result and resigned.
For the mentor, this was already the second period of work with the South Korean national team. He previously managed the team at the 2014 World Cup, where the Koreans also failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing last in their group.
