Mexico vs England: A History of Clashes Ahead of the 2026 World Cup Knockouts
0
The 2026 World Cup is moving into its decisive phase. In the round of 16, England will face Mexico — an opponent they know well from a century of meetings. For the Three Lions, it’s another step toward that elusive trophy they haven’t lifted since 1966. Mexico, meanwhile, wants to break a long losing streak and create a massive upset.
So far, the teams have met ten times. The only official World Cup encounter came on June 16, 1966, at Wembley Stadium during the group stage of a tournament England would go on to win. In front of 90,000 fans, the hosts won 2-0 with goals from Bobby Charlton and Roger Hunt — a key result on their way to the title.
Friendly matches tell an even more one-sided story. In 1959, Mexico won 2-1 at home, but two years later England responded with an 8-0 thrashing in London. After a 0-0 draw in June 1969, the English won 4-0 two days later. Mexico’s only victory since 1961 came in June 1985 (1-0). Since then, they have lost five straight: 0-3 in 1986, 0-2 in 1997, 0-4 in 2001, and 1-3 in 2010.
The most recent meeting was on May 24, 2010, again at Wembley. England won 3-1 thanks to Ledley King, Peter Crouch, and Glen Johnson; Guillermo Franco scored for Mexico.
All matches:
- May 24, 1959: Mexico 2-1 England (friendly)
- May 10, 1961: England 8-0 Mexico (friendly)
- June 16, 1966: England 2-0 Mexico (World Cup group stage)
- June 1, 1969: Mexico 0-0 England (friendly)
- June 3, 1969: Mexico 0-4 England (friendly)
- June 9, 1985: Mexico 1-0 England (friendly)
- May 17, 1986: Mexico 0-3 England (friendly)
- March 29, 1997: England 2-0 Mexico (friendly)
- May 25, 2001: England 4-0 Mexico (friendly)
- May 24, 2010: England 3-1 Mexico (friendly)
Now they meet in a World Cup knockout round, with England holding the historical edge (7 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw). But Mexico has always prided itself on grit and surprise. Will El Tri finally topple a European giant, or will England continue its dominance? The answer comes soon.
