Paraguay vs. France: Can the Shock Underdog Stop the Tournament Favorite?
0
Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field will host one of the most intriguing Round of 16 matches at the 2026 World Cup. Paraguay, already the tournament’s biggest surprise, will try to derail a seemingly unstoppable French side.
Gustavo Alfaro’s Paraguay stunned the world by eliminating four-time champion Germany on penalties. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill was the hero, and defender José Canale converted the decisive spot kick. After an opening loss to the United States, the team have improved defensively, showing remarkable discipline and organization. Midfielder Diego Gómez returns from suspension, adding creativity in the middle. In attack, Paraguay will rely on Miguel Almirón, Julio Enciso, and Gabriel Ávalos to exploit space on the counter – their most dangerous weapon.
France have won every game so far, cruising past Iraq, Norway, and then Sweden in the last round. Les Bleus became the first team in World Cup history to score at least three goals in five consecutive matches. Their attacking quartet of Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé, and Bradley Barcola is terrifying. Mbappé continues his quest for records, while Olise – with five assists – is closing in on Pelé’s single-tournament record. Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot provide solidity in midfield.
Yet this will be no walkover. Paraguay have already proven they can frustrate elite sides, and history adds spice: back in 1998, France needed a Laurent Blanc golden goal in the 114th minute to beat Paraguay. If the South Americans can impose a tight battle and capitalize on breakaways, the favorites may face their toughest test yet.
Probable lineups:
Paraguay: Gill – Cáceres, Gómez, Canale, Alonso – Galarza, Cubas, Diego Gómez – Almirón, Ávalos, Enciso
France: Maignan – Koundé, Upamecano, Saliba, Digne – Tchouaméni, Rabiot – Dembélé, Olise, Barcola – Mbappé
