Manchester United in Crisis: Ugarte Injury and Missed Targets Leave Midfield Decimated
0
What was supposed to be a summer of transition has turned into an emergency for Manchester United. Casemiro’s contract expired on June 30, and the club’s midfield rebuild has since collapsed under a wave of bad luck and missed opportunities.
The biggest blow came from the international stage. Manuel Ugarte, a player United had hoped to sell this window, suffered a severe injury during Uruguay’s World Cup match against Spain. The 25-year-old is now sidelined until at least the end of 2026, killing any chance of a transfer. That leaves Kobbie Mainoo as the only established central midfielder from last season’s squad.
Attempts to reinforce have failed one after another. Top target Elliot Anderson joined Manchester City on June 25 for a staggering £116 million. Mateus Fernandes chose Tottenham over United, with Spurs paying West Ham £85 million — United refused to get drawn into a bidding war that would have pushed the price to £90 million. A deal for Atalanta’s Ederson was agreed at £35 million, but his involvement with Brazil’s national team has delayed the medical.
When Michael Carrick’s squad reports for training on July 9, only Mason Mount — far more attacking in nature — will be available from the senior group. The first preseason friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18 will rely entirely on academy players: Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher, Jacob Devaney, Jack Moorhouse, Jayce Fitzgerald, Sekou Kone, and Jim Thwaites.
Scouts are scrambling for alternatives. Alex Scott (Bournemouth) is the priority, but Bournemouth refuse to sell and Arsenal are circling. Tyler Adams, also from Bournemouth, could be had for £40–50 million, though his history of knee and back injuries raises red flags. Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, valued around £50 million, offers a Casemiro-like profile but lacks experience. Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund is well known to sporting director Jason Wilcox from their Manchester City academy days, but he signed a new contract in March and no active talks are underway. Aurélien Tchouaméni remains the dream — but his wages would break new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s austerity drive, and Real Madrid’s new manager José Mourinho is reportedly keeping the Frenchman at the Bernabéu. Meanwhile, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba still costs over £100 million, a price tag the Seagulls refuse to lower.
United’s hierarchy expects the midfield problem to be solved before serious friendlies begin, notably against Atlético Madrid on August 1. Right now, the clock is ticking and the options are shrinking.
