Carlos Queiroz steps down as Ghana head coach after World Cup 2026 exit

Carlos Queiroz has announced his departure as head coach of the Ghana national team, following the Black Stars’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician took to social media to confirm the decision, writing: "Football, like life, teaches us one eternal lesson: you either win or you learn. I end this journey proud of what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction inherent in those who always aim higher. Reaching the top should never be the final destination – it must be the start of even greater ambition."
Queiroz, who took the job in April this year, oversaw just five matches. In the group stage of the World Cup, Ghana beat Panama (1-0), drew with England (0-0), and lost to Croatia (1-2). They were then eliminated in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia. His overall record: one win, two draws and two losses, with a goal difference of 3-4.
In his statement, Queiroz thanked the federation president, his players and staff, and the fans. "We cannot speak of total sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say we represented Ghana's colours with honour and restored the respect and authority of the Black Stars on the world's greatest football stage," he said. He also urged investment in off-field infrastructure to develop the country's talent.
Queiroz’s tenure ends just months after it began, but his message was forward-looking: "The journey begins now. Onwards."
