Rafael Márquez Named Mexico Head Coach on Four-Year Deal
0
Rafael Márquez is officially the new head coach of the Mexico national team. The 47-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Mexican Football Federation, taking over from Javier Aguirre, who stepped down after Mexico’s Round of 16 elimination at the 2026 World Cup.
The appointment follows a succession plan set in motion back in 2024. At that time, Márquez left his role at Barcelona Atlètic to join Aguirre’s coaching staff ahead of the home World Cup. Now, he steps into the top job with a mandate that runs through the 2030 cycle.
Márquez will oversee Mexico’s campaigns in the CONCACAF Nations League, the Gold Cup, and qualification for the 2030 World Cup.
A true icon of Mexican football, Márquez earned 147 caps for his country and played in five World Cups. During his club career with Barcelona, he won two UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga championships.
