‘The most expensive transfer that never happened’: Klopp reveals Mbappe talks on a private jet

Jurgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, has shared details of the club’s attempt to sign Kylian Mbappe back in 2016, when the French forward was still making a name for himself at Monaco. The German coach revealed that negotiations took place directly with Mbappe’s family. The meeting happened aboard a private plane in Nice. According to Klopp, the aircraft had roughly five rooms, and the two sides shared dinner and conversation while trying to keep a low profile. “It was the most expensive transfer that never happened! We flew to Nice, Mbappe’s family came on board... The impressions were great, but in the end, Mbappe still went to PSG,” Klopp recalled. Mbappe left Monaco for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017, spending several successful seasons there before eventually joining Real Madrid.
