Michael Edwards resigns from FSG: The architect of Liverpool's success steps down

Liverpool are facing another major shake-up in their executive ranks. Michael Edwards, the chief executive of football for Fenway Sports Group, has decided to end his tenure with the club's American owners.
According to The Telegraph, Edwards informed FSG of his intention to leave last autumn. Despite efforts from ownership to persuade him to stay, he has made a final decision. His contract still had one year remaining.
Edwards is a defining figure in Liverpool's modern era. He joined FSG shortly after their 2010 takeover of the club, eventually becoming the club's first sporting director. He left in 2022, only to return in 2024 with a broader mandate: overseeing the acquisition of a second club and building a global football network.
Together with Julian Ward and Pedro Marques, Edwards evaluated more than 20 potential targets, including serious interest in Spanish sides Getafe and Malaga, as well as French club Bordeaux. None of those deals materialized, and sources indicate that the lack of progress on expansion was a key source of frustration.
During his second stint, Edwards still made his mark. He was instrumental in appointing Richard Hughes as Liverpool's sporting director and backed the decision to bring in Arne Slot as head coach following Jurgen Klopp's departure. His groundwork helped the team secure the Premier League title in 2025.
His exit deepens the sense of transition at Anfield. FSG president Mike Gordon is expected to take a more hands-on role. The coaching staff has also changed: this summer, former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola took over as head coach. The future of sporting director Richard Hughes remains uncertain — his contract runs until 2027, but rumors continue to link him with Saudi club Al-Hilal.
In a farewell statement, Edwards thanked the leadership and fans: "It was an honor to return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club at such an important time. I leave believing the club is in a strong position with great people, clear direction, and a solid foundation. While the broader project evolved differently than originally envisioned, I am proud of the work our team did in presenting owners with a wide range of thoughtful options for the future. I want to thank Mike, John Henry, Tom Werner, and everyone at FSG and Liverpool for their support, and most of all the fans, whose passion makes this club so special."
