Switzerland lose top scorer ahead of World Cup 2026 quarterfinal against Argentina

Switzerland will have to face the reigning world champions without their most dangerous attacking weapon. Head coach Murat Yakin confirmed that midfielder Johan Manzambi has not recovered from a knee injury and will miss Friday's World Cup 2026 quarterfinal against Argentina.
Manzambi, 20, hurt his knee during the final training session before the round-of-16 clash with Colombia. He sat out that match as a result, and the medical staff pushed hard to get him ready for the Argentina game. Despite their efforts, they couldn't get him back in time.
The loss is a massive blow for the Swiss. Manzambi has been their standout performer at this World Cup, scoring three goals and providing two assists in four appearances. His pace and vision in midfield have been central to Switzerland's run to the last eight.
Argentina and Switzerland will fight for a semifinal spot on July 12. Kickoff is set for 4:00 AM Kyiv time.
