Argentina’s defensive duo admits worries after conceding four goals in two knockout games

Argentina’s World Cup title defense is still alive, but the backline is showing cracks at the worst possible time. Before Saturday’s quarterfinal against Switzerland at Arrowhead Stadium, defenders Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez openly acknowledged the issues that have plagued the team in recent matches. Romero, the Tottenham center-back, didn’t sugarcoat the situation: “Everything is fine in the squad, but there are definitely things we can improve. We’ve conceded four goals in our last two games, and that bothers us. Still, we always give our best and follow the coach’s instructions.” Argentina’s group stage was nearly flawless — clean sheets against Algeria and Austria, with only a single goal allowed against Jordan. The knockout rounds told a different story. In the round of 32, they needed extra time to overcome Cape Verde, and in the round of 16, they found themselves two goals down against Egypt with just twelve minutes left on the clock. Romero started the comeback, and Enzo Fernández snatched the winner in stoppage time. Martínez, who scored the extra-time winner against Cape Verde, echoed his partner’s concerns. “We don’t like conceding, and we have to be much more focused. With better concentration, we can avoid these goals. It’s part of the game, and it’s good that it’s happening now — we’re grounded and can correct it,” said the Manchester United defender. Now comes Switzerland, a side that advanced after a goalless draw with Colombia in regulation time. Martínez warned: “Every match has been tough, and tomorrow will be no different. Switzerland didn’t make it easy for Colombia. I think they dominated that game. It’ll be a great contest. They have very good players, but we are ready.” The winner will face either Norway or England in the semifinals.
