Sources in Italy claim the Spaniard’s potential appointment is backed by newly installed technical director Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo. The pair are pushing for a major overhaul of the Azzurri following yet another failed World Cup qualification campaign. Alongside Guardiola, Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte are also being considered. However, the report suggests neither fully aligns with Maldini’s long-term vision for rebuilding the national side after missing out on the 2026 World Cup. Italy’s failure to qualify for the tournament has triggered a broader rethink within the federation. For now, U-21 coach Silvio Baldini continues to hold the reins on an interim basis.
