Yakin: 'Referee error destroyed everything. Football lost today'

Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin didn't hold back after his team's 3-1 quarterfinal loss to Argentina at the 2026 World Cup. While acknowledging the quality of the opponent, Yakin pointed the finger at a controversial refereeing decision that he believes completely derailed his side's game plan. “We were punished for a mistake. There was no reason for that card. I don't understand that decision. It was an innocent situation, not malicious. The referee's error punished us and destroyed our entire plan. There was clear contact, and I don't understand how the referee and VAR reached that conclusion,” Yakin said. According to the Swiss boss, his team had every right to feel cheated. He insisted the match was open and fair until that moment, but the outcome of such a crucial game should never hinge on a disputed call. “I wouldn't say Argentina had refereeing favor. It was an honest and open game. Both teams played football. But today football lost. We can complain, but I have to congratulate Argentina. I don't want to dwell on it anymore,” he added. The defeat ends Switzerland's run at the tournament, while Argentina move one step closer to defending their world title.
