Bordeaux Relegated to French Sixth Division After Financial Collapse

0
Bordeaux have been officially demoted to Regional 1 — the sixth tier of French football — for the 2026-27 season. The ruling came from the DNCG, the body that oversees club finances in France, after the club failed to resolve its mounting financial issues. The six-time Ligue 1 champions needed to raise approximately €10 million to clear debts and secure funding for the next campaign, but the board could not meet the deadline. As a result, the DNCG confirmed an administrative relegation, pushing the club out of professional football entirely. Making matters worse, a proposed takeover by investment fund Sparta Capital fell through after the fund failed to gather the required capital. Club owner Gérard Lopez has not given up hope — he plans to appeal to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) in an attempt to buy time and secure a new investor. Last season, Bordeaux were playing in the fourth division and finished second. Now, one of France's most decorated clubs finds itself two more steps down the pyramid, fighting for survival outside the professional leagues.
