Dynamo Kyiv Face Decisive Clash in Cluj: Goalless First Leg Leaves Everything Open

0
On Thursday evening, July 16, at Cluj Arena, Universitatea Cluj will host Dynamo Kyiv in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round. After a 0-0 stalemate in Lublin last week, the Romanian side now rely on home support to pull off a historic progression. In the first match, Dynamo dominated possession and chances, firing 27 shots – six on target – but couldn't break through. Universitatea coach Cristiano Bergodi admitted his team were fortunate to escape with a draw, but now, with nearly 20,000 tickets sold, he expects more attacking intent. The problem? His side managed only three shots in total in Poland, just one on goal. Furthermore, Universitatea lost a penalty shootout to Universitatea Craiova on Sunday (1-1 in regulation, 3-5 on penalties) and haven't scored in four consecutive games. Bergodi will still be without top scorer Jovo Lukic, who hasn't joined the squad yet, while defender Dino Mikanovic picked up an injury before the first leg. Dynamo, meanwhile, played a friendly against Polish side Radomiak the day after the goalless draw, winning 4-2. Coach Ihor Kostiuk gave minutes to players who didn't feature in Lublin, gathering more intel for his selection. The Ukrainian side controlled large spells of the first leg but again struggled to finish against a deep defensive block. Counter-attacks remain a vulnerability for Kostiuk's team. After last season's early European exit (losing to Maccabi Tel Aviv in Europa League qualifying following a Champions League elimination), Dynamo cannot afford another disappointment. They need to show quality and convert chances. The winner of this tie will face Greek side PAOK in the next Europa League qualifying round, while the loser drops into the Conference League qualifying against Norwegian club Brann. Bookmakers favor Dynamo: odds for a Kyiv win are 1.79, a home win is 4.81, and a draw is 4.23. Probable lineups: Universitatea Cluj: Mihail – Stanoev, Cristea, Cubis, Chipciu – Codrea, Drammeh – Mendy, Bic, Ștefănescu – Macalu. Dynamo Kyiv: Neshcheret – Dubinchak, Mykhavko, Bilovar, Kędziora – Brazhko, Shaparenko, Buyalskyi – Redushko, Voloshyn, Ponomarenko.
