Argentina captain Lionel Messi could barely contain his emotions after winning the 2026 World Cup semifinal, sending the defending champions to the title match for the second straight time.
The 39-year-old forward, who recorded two assists and was named Man of the Match, described the victory as an incredible gift to the entire nation.
"Everything we've been through has been incredible. This wasn't just another win — it was the success that we and all the Argentine people wanted. It took us to another World Cup final," Messi said.
The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner stressed the uniqueness of the achievement: "It's madness to play in two consecutive World Cup finals. This team is just unbelievable. Even when we were behind, we never stopped believing. We kept pushing and eventually earned this victory."
Messi also praised his teammates' character amidst injury setbacks: "When this team comes together, it always finds something extra. The players energize each other and pull resources from where they seemingly don't exist anymore."
He then turned his attention to the Final opponent, Spain: "Spain are an outstanding side with great footballers and a clear philosophy. I know this team well and many of its players. I think the final will be very even."
Messi urged fans to savor the moment, calling back-to-back final appearances historic: "We are in another World Cup final as reigning champions. Few teams manage to reach two finals in a row, and this team did it. It proves our success is no coincidence."
The 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain will be played on July 19.
