Man Utd 'holding back' budget for dream target after €98m transfer failure
have been forced to rethink their summer plans after seeing top target Mateus Fernandes agree to join Tottenham, with several names emerging as alternative options.
United had identified Fernandes as their ideal signing for the summer alongside , .
However, Fernandes is (€98.7m) all guaranteed and up front, compared to United, who were only willing to meet the valuation with instalments and add-ons.
The report that United were also ‘not convinced’ that Fernandes ‘really wanted to play for the club’, with the 21-year-old preferring to have an ‘open mind’ about his next club instead of pushing to move to Old Trafford.
United are now set to move onto other targets, with the club’s priority to only buy players at what they consider to be the ‘right valuation’, similar to the transfer business last summer.
Although United have not pressed ahead with a firm new priority, a number of players feature on their shortlist, with the scope of investment potentially depending on sales as well as the deals available to the club.
