Manchester United agree £50m deal for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos for a fee of £50 million, with £48 million guaranteed and £2 million in add-ons. Chelsea have also inserted a 10% sell-on clause into the deal.
Santos is now set to undergo his medical at Old Trafford as the move nears completion. The 21-year-old joined Chelsea from Vasco da Gama and has since had loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg. Last season, Santos made 43 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
United are also expected to finalise a separate move for Brazil midfielder Ederson, who is set to arrive from Serie A side Atalanta.
Strengthening the midfield has been a top priority for United this summer following Casemiro's departure after his contract expired and Manuel Ugarte's long-term injury sustained while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Crysencio Summerville remains United's primary left-wing target, though midfield reinforcements are taking precedence for now. The club has held exploratory talks with West Ham over the Netherlands international, but Tottenham are also keen and United are aware they could lose out to Spurs again after Mateus Fernandes chose a move to north London from West Ham earlier this summer.
United hope to fund a deal for Summerville through the sale of Marcus Rashford, who is expected back at Old Trafford after his post-World Cup break. Depending on England's progress in the tournament, that could be well into August.
The pursuit of Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall has been put on hold until United add more midfielders.
In other news, former United boss Ruben Amorim has apologised to the club's fans after being sacked in January. Now in charge at AC Milan, Amorim admitted he made mistakes during his 14 months at Old Trafford, which included the club's worst Premier League finish and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. He said: "The only thing I can say is that I learned a lot and I made some mistakes. I didn't have the opportunity – and I am sorry for that – to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment. I am really proud to have been their coach for a year."
Chelsea have also completed the £40 million signing of winger Geovany Quenda on an eight-year contract. The 18-year-old will remain at Sporting Lisbon for the 2025/26 season after suffering a metatarsal fracture at the end of 2025, which kept him out until March 2026. He spent part of his rehabilitation using Chelsea's facilities.
