Staveley camp calls 'utter nonsense' on £50m Guimaraes claim as Arsenal-Newcastle standoff continues
0
The Bruno Guimaraes transfer saga took another sharp turn on Monday after a report suggested that intermediaries had misled Arsenal into believing the midfielder could be had for as little as £50 million (€59m).
The claim, published by The media, alleged that former Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley had indicated during a conversation that Guimaraes might be available for that fee if the Magpies failed to qualify for the Champions League. Staveley, who left the club two years ago, categorically denies that any such exchange ever took place. Her husband, Mehrdad Ghodoussi, took to social media to label the story “utter nonsense.”
Newcastle, meanwhile, remain adamant that their captain is not for sale unless a bid in excess of €100m lands on the table. Arsenal have yet to make direct contact with the club; all communication so far has gone through middlemen. A verbal offer made via intermediaries in late June was rejected out of hand, and while Guimaraes is open to a move to north London, he has no intention of forcing a confrontation with the Newcastle hierarchy or its supporters.
Eddie Howe has already parted with two key players this summer in Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, making the prospect of losing his midfield anchor even less palatable. Arsenal respect Newcastle’s position, but the Gunners are unwilling to overpay for a player who turns 29 later this year. For now, the deal remains deadlocked with no guarantee that the two sides will find common ground before the window closes.
