Official: Arsenal announce Illan Meslier as second summer signing

0
Arsenal have confirmed their second incoming transfer of the summer window, with Mikel Arteta securing the signing of French goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer. Meslier, 26, arrives after his contract at Leeds United expired last month. He spent seven years at Elland Road, making more than 200 appearances across all competitions, including three full seasons as Leeds’ first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League. However, after Leeds won promotion from the Championship in 2025, a series of errors and inconsistent form saw him lose his place in the starting lineup. The Gunners had already made Piero Hincapie’s loan move permanent earlier in the window, but Meslier becomes the first new face to walk through the door this summer. He is expected to provide competition for David Raya in goal, though his own top-flight performances have raised questions about whether he can be relied upon as a long-term deputy. “I’m extremely happy,” Meslier said. “It's a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England. I'm very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I've got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again.” Meslier’s arrival is also expected to pave the way for third-choice goalkeeper Tommy Setford to leave on loan, while Kepa Arrizabalaga could be sold if a suitable offer arrives this summer.
