Arsenal Leave Newcastle ‘Flabbergasted’ in Bruno Guimarães Saga

0
Arsenal have left Newcastle United stunned and flabbergasted by their handling of the ongoing Bruno Guimarães transfer saga, according to media reporter Keith Downie. Reports emerged at the end of June that the Gunners had submitted a verbal offer for the Magpies captain. Although Guimarães is regularly linked with a move, this approach came somewhat out of the blue. Newcastle rejected it out of hand, and the story went quiet as the Brazil international headed to the World Cup. Behind the scenes, however, tension began to build on Tyneside. Sources indicate Newcastle grew increasingly concerned that Guimarães could start pushing for the exit. Word from the Brazil camp suggested the 28-year-old was keen on joining Arsenal after growing frustrated at St. James’ Park. Given his age, this is likely his last chance to join a club that regularly competes for the biggest honours. Recently, it emerged that Guimarães had officially informed Newcastle of his desire to pursue a transfer to Arsenal — a significant blow for the club, even if they continue to insist he is not for sale. A bid from Arsenal is expected, but the Gunners are hesitant to overpay for a midfielder approaching 29, especially without a pressing need for a marquee signing in that position. Downie has now provided clarity on the state of play. Speaking from a Newcastle perspective, he revealed the club are “flabbergasted” by the whole situation. Crucially, Arsenal have not yet made direct contact with Newcastle. All communication so far has gone through intermediaries. There have been no talks with Andrea Berta or any other Arsenal representative. The sheer amount of noise with no direct contact has stunned the Magpies, and it only serves to unsettle Guimarães, who is currently on holiday. Downie corroborates that the 28-year-old has personally told Newcastle he wants to leave — the message came directly from him, not from an agent. To push the move through, Guimarães and his representative Alexis Malavolta have teamed up with superagent Kia Joorabchian, known to be a fan of Arsenal. Joorabchian’s involvement caused a stir on social media. Importantly, this saga is not about money for Guimarães — it is purely a footballing decision. At the same time, he does not want to damage his strong relationship with Newcastle. He will not pull an Alexander Isak-style strike. He wants to pursue the Arsenal opportunity and challenge for major honours, but he is not forcefully agitating for a transfer. Staying put would not be a disaster for him, and he understands Newcastle will only sell if they receive top dollar. No price has been set, though Downie suggests the Magpies could demand as much as €100m given Guimarães’ importance. Whether a deal gets done is impossible to know at this stage, especially since Arsenal have not yet submitted a formal offer.
