Barcelona’s Laporta Confirms Alvarez Bid Still Active, Adeyemi Deal Done
0
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed the club’s bid for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez remains on the table, as Arsenal ramp up their interest in the Argentine international.
Alvarez, 26, made headlines during the World Cup when he curled home an extra-time winner for Argentina in a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Switzerland – a moment that reignited the transfer battle that had been brewing before the tournament. Real Madrid had a €150 million offer rejected, while Atletico publicly mocked Barcelona’s proposal on social media.
Arsenal have yet to submit a formal bid but are intensifying their pursuit, with PSG’s earlier interest cooling. Speaking ahead of Spain’s World Cup semifinal against France in Dallas, Laporta made clear that Barcelona’s offer was still live.
“Our bid was made with the intention of signing the player, who is liked by both the sporting director and the coach. I think he’s a fantastic player,” Laporta told reporters. “Our substantial offer is still on the table, but it won’t be there forever.”
Laporta added that he had spoken with Atletico president Miguel Angel Gil. “We spoke very clearly and amicably. There was some initial confusion regarding the offer we made. I clarified it, and we haven’t pressured them further.”
Reports in Spain claim Alvarez is Barcelona’s top target and willing to push for a move, but Atletico remain adamant he will not leave. Barcelona’s financial situation could be eased by a potential loan deal, though Arsenal’s deeper pockets keep them in the race.
Laporta also confirmed the arrival of Borussia Dortmund winger Adeyemi. “We are very excited about Adeyemi. He’s dangerous and fast, and Deco handled the signing very well,” he said.
Furthermore, the president dismissed suggestions that Raphinha could be sold to a Saudi Pro League club. “Raphinha will stay. We have no interest in him leaving Barca. He’s a key player. With Gordon and Adeyemi, we’re strengthening the attack, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to let Raphinha go.”
Barcelona’s summer plans are taking shape, but the fate of the Alvarez pursuit remains uncertain while Atletico hold firm.
