Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal? Premier League champions target Newcastle captain for midfield upgrade

Two days after Arsenal’s title celebrations at Selhurst Park in May, co-chairman Josh Kroenke was already mapping out the next step. “If you’re not continually trying to evolve and improve, you’re standing still,” he said at the club’s training ground. Kroenke described the project as entering its “win window” and made clear the recruitment strategy would reflect that ambition. “We have very strong foundations in place to continue to build and sustain. Getting the foundations in place is usually the hardest part of the journey. Now it’s about trying to stay at the top knowing everyone is trying to climb the mountain after you.” That philosophy is now being put into practice with Arsenal’s pursuit of Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazil international has informed Newcastle of his desire to move to north London, and the Gunners are using their status as champions to land one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders. Guimaraes turns 29 in November. He would become the oldest signee for a significant fee in the Kroenke era – but that matters less at this stage of Arsenal’s project. What counts is that he can slot straight in and lift the level of the team. Over four‑and‑a‑half years at Newcastle, Guimaraes has made 153 Premier League appearances and established himself among the elite in his position. Since his first full season in England, he has played more than 85 percent of available league minutes, a rate that underlines his durability and reliability. He has evolved into a midfielder who blends physical intensity with technical guile. Since 2022, his name appears in the Premier League’s top five for both tackles and through‑balls – sitting alongside destroyers such as Joao Palhinha and Moises Caicedo in one category and creators such as Bruno Fernandes and Martin Odegaard in the other. Even during a difficult season for Newcastle last term, Guimaraes produced numbers that put him among the most productive central midfielders in the league across a wide range of on‑ball and off‑ball metrics. His aggressive work without the ball would appeal to Mikel Arteta, who wants his side to keep dominating opponents physically. But Guimaraes also offers technical quality. Arsenal have lacked craft and incision from open play in central midfield; their set‑piece threat has masked that gap. Guimaraes could provide the penetration they need. Declan Rice remains vital, and Martin Zubimendi still has plenty to offer, but Guimaraes is a more incisive passer than either. Last season he sent a higher percentage of passes forward and with greater accuracy. He averaged more line‑breaking passes per 90, more through‑balls and more open‑play chances created. His versatility is another plus. Like Rice, Guimaraes is comfortable as a No. 6 or a No. 8 – he can accelerate buildup from deep or push higher to break down stubborn defences. Best known as a tough‑tackling leader whose full‑blooded style embodies Newcastle under Eddie Howe, he also delivers a reliable stream of goals and assists. In 153 league games for Newcastle, he has 55 goal involvements, hitting double figures in each of the last three seasons. His arrival would raise questions about some of Arsenal’s other midfielders, including Myles Lewis‑Skelly, who displaced Zubimendi late last season. But it would also allow Arteta to manage the load on players who clearly felt the strain of a 63‑game season. Zubimendi’s form dipped in the second half due to fatigue, and Rice recently admitted the toll the campaign took.
