Bruno Guimarães Tells Newcastle He Wants Arsenal Move After Brazil's World Cup Exit
0
Bruno Guimarães has informed Newcastle United that he wants to join Arsenal, according to sources close to the situation. The Brazil international, who captains the Magpies, made his intentions clear after returning from the World Cup, where he missed a penalty in Brazil’s last-16 defeat to Norway.
Newcastle have declined to comment on the matter, and Arsenal have not made any direct contact with the club regarding the midfielder. However, it is understood that intermediaries have begun exploring the terms of a potential deal.
Guimarães still has two years left on his Newcastle contract, with a club option to extend until 2029. Despite the player’s wishes, Newcastle remain adamant he is not for sale. The club’s stance has been firm all summer — their captain is off the market and they are not entertaining bids.
The 28-year-old joined Newcastle from Lyon for £35 million in January 2022 and has been central to their resurgence under Saudi-backed ownership. He lifted the Carabao Cup two seasons ago — the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years — and remains a fan favorite at St. James’ Park.
Manager Eddie Howe is desperate to keep hold of one of his most important players, especially after last summer’s upheaval. Alexander Isak forced a £130 million move to Liverpool following a strike, Anthony Gordon joined Barcelona for £69.3 million, and Sandro Tonali departed for Tottenham in a £100 million deal. Those exits brought in around £169.3 million, easing Newcastle’s financial fair play concerns, but another high-profile departure would force another major rebuild.
Newcastle struggled last season after failing to adequately replace Isak, eventually finishing 12th in the Premier League.
