France's World Cup Dominance: Are They Truly Unstoppable?
0
France have been nothing short of devastating at this World Cup. Five matches, five victories, 14 goals scored and only two conceded. With Kylian Mbappé tearing through defenses and a supporting cast that includes Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola, Didier Deschamps’ side looks almost unfair on paper.
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright summed it up: “France are one of the most clear favourites for a World Cup tournament I have ever seen.” The bookmakers agree, and most neutrals have already penciled in Les Bleus for a third final in four editions.
Yet not every expert is convinced. broadcaster Radio 5 Live’s Ian Dennis points to Spain as his new favorite. “Spain have a greater control, defensively limit sides to few chances and are still yet to concede,” he said. Dennis noted that Senegal should have led France at halftime, and an understrength Norway side created nervous moments in Boston. “I think Morocco can give them problems but lying in wait should be Spain in the last four – a repeat of the Euro 2024 semi-final that Spain won 2-1.”
Chief football writer Phil McNulty acknowledges France’s brilliance but insists they are beatable. “They will run into serial winners and European champions Spain in the semi-final,” he wrote. “Spain are on a remarkable 35-game unbeaten streak in all competitions and simply know how to get results.” McNulty added that if France overcome Spain, they could meet Argentina or England in the final – sides that would believe they can win.
sources journalist Elizabeth Conway highlighted Spain’s defensive solidity. “They have won every match so far without conceding a single goal, thanks largely to the impressive centre-back partnership of teenager Pau Cubarsí and veteran Aymeric Laporte.” With Lamine Yamal still working back to full fitness, Spain have relied on a disciplined system built around Rodri and Pedri’s midfield control. “Spain have also beaten France in each of their past two matches. If Spain take their chances in front of goal, they can beat France,” Conway said.
Veteran commentator John Murray drew historical parallels. “France have been by a distance the most exciting team to watch here and have played the most attractive football. But over the years a number of those teams have gone on to fall short at World Cups.” He cited Brazil 1982, Denmark 1986, Germany 2006 and Brazil 2014 as examples, suggesting Spain could once again prevail in a semi-final.
Neil Johnston of sources cautioned that France may still have another level. “It’s going to require something special to stop them,” he said. But as the knockout rounds tighten, the margin for error shrinks. France are favorites – but this tournament has already proven that nothing is guaranteed.
