Prince William tells England to 'hold heads high' after World Cup semi-final defeat

The Prince of Wales has sent a personal message to the England squad following their heartbreaking 2-1 World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina, telling the players they have "inspired us all."
In a statement released through Kensington Palace, Prince William – who serves as patron of the Football Association – wrote that he was "gutted" by the result. But he praised the team's fight and belief, calling them "the most complete England team in a tournament."
"Hold your heads high," he wrote, signing off simply as "W."
Argentina scored two late goals to snatch a place in the final against Spain in Atlanta, cancelling out Anthony Gordon's 55th-minute strike that had given England the lead after a goalless first half.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also expressed his disappointment, saying he was "gutted" but proud of the passion and energy the players showed representing the badge.
"Tonight wasn't the result we all hoped for," Starmer said. "But this England team has given it their all."
Prince William, a known Aston Villa fan, thanked everyone involved with the squad for an incredible tournament. His message came shortly after the full-time whistle in Atlanta.
