Bellingham Slaps Argentina Substitute Barco After England's World Cup Exit

0
Jude Bellingham is facing potential disciplinary action from FIFA after striking Argentina substitute Valentin Barco on the back of the head at the final whistle of Wednesday's World Cup semifinal. England had just lost 2–1 to Argentina in Atlanta, with Lautaro Martinez heading home a stoppage-time winner to shatter the Three Lions' hopes. As the Argentine players celebrated their victory, Barco – who did not feature in the match – ran onto the field and was embracing teammates near Bellingham when the Real Madrid midfielder walked over and delivered an open-handed slap to the back of Barco's head. The incident quickly escalated. Players from both sides converged, pushing and shoving before Bellingham pulled away and walked off. It is unclear what triggered the reaction, but footage showed Barco sprinting onto the pitch moments after Enzo Fernandez's 85th-minute equalizer and celebrating in front of the England bench. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, commentating on the match for broadcaster Radio 5 Live, called Barco's celebration "probably the worst example of sportsmanship we've seen at this World Cup." Bellingham could now be cited by FIFA's disciplinary committee for violent conduct. A guilty verdict would sideline the 23-year-old for Saturday's bronze medal match against France in Miami. However, FIFA is more likely to view the act as petulant rather than violent; the laws of the game state there is no red-card offense if a player strikes an opponent on the head with negligible force. Barco, 21, who plays for French club Strasbourg and previously had a spell at Brighton, is expected to join Chelsea. He has played only once at the tournament, as a second-half substitute in Argentina's 3–1 group-stage win over Jordan. The first half in Atlanta was tempestuous, with 19 fouls as American referee Ismail Elfath struggled to keep control. Bellingham, who has scored six goals this World Cup, also had a brief confrontation with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the fourth minute after England midfielder Elliot Anderson was fouled. "We were really just discussing a foul, actually," Bellingham said after the match. "It wasn't anything bad. I'm sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal, but it was nothing."
