Quansah set to start at right-back for England in World Cup last-16 clash with Mexico

Jarell Quansah is expected to line up at right-back for England when they take on Mexico in the World Cup round-of-16 at the Azteca Stadium on Monday. The 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender gets the nod ahead of Djed Spence, who reported a muscle issue on Sunday morning, and with Reece James still sidelined by a hamstring problem. Quansah, primarily a centre-back, will earn his sixth senior England cap in what is a high-stakes knockout fixture. Manager Thomas Tuchel is also set to reinstate Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon on the wings, replacing Noni Madueke and Marcus Rashford. Jordan Pickford starts in goal, with Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi at centre-half and Nico O'Reilly at left-back. Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson anchor the midfield, while Jude Bellingham operates behind captain Harry Kane. Quansah returned to full training earlier this week after rolling his ankle in the group-stage win over Panama – the same match in which he made his first start for England. He later came off injured, but has recovered in time for the Mexico test. James, the Chelsea captain, has missed England's last two games and was the only player absent from Saturday's session. Tuchel admitted the 26-year-old would need a late fitness check for a place on the bench. Arsenal's Declan Rice, who finished the DR Congo match at right-back, has been managing a hamstring issue but is expected to be fit to start. Quansah joined Leverkusen from Liverpool last summer for £35m, shortly after helping England win the European Under-21 Championship. He made 58 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Premier League and Carabao Cup, and has scored five goals in 44 games for the German champions – two more than he managed during his time at Anfield.
