Manchester United have officially secured the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, activating a £35 million release clause in the Belgian midfielder's contract. The 29-year-old has agreed to a five-year deal at Old Trafford.
Tielemans, who recently helped Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals, spent the last three seasons at Villa Park after originally moving to England with Leicester City in 2019. He will wear the number 18 shirt, previously held by Casemiro following the Brazilian's departure when his contract expired.
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans said. “Signing for such a special club feels incredible. It is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football.”
The midfielder made his senior debut for Anderlecht at 16 years and 82 days old before moving to Monaco in 2017 shortly after his 20th birthday. Over 578 club appearances, he has scored 79 goals in 668 total club and country games. His trophy highlights include scoring Leicester’s winner against Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final and Aston Villa’s winner in last season’s Europa League final against Freiburg.
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, praised the signing: “Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years. He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United. His consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad.”
Injuries limited Tielemans to just 35 appearances in all competitions last season – his lowest tally since moving to England. He suffered separate calf and ankle problems during the campaign. However, he delivered memorable moments on the international stage, including an 89th-minute equalizer against Senegal at the World Cup and a penalty extra-time winner in a 3–2 victory – his 15th goal in 90 caps for Belgium. His tournament ended early when he picked up an injury in the warm-up before Belgium’s 2–1 quarter-final loss to Spain.
Tielemans’ arrival follows the signings of fellow midfielder Andrey Santos and goalkeeper Karl Darlow, while a move for Atalanta’s Ederson has been put on hold. United had also explored deals for Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson but remained disciplined in their transfer approach, targeting multiple options before finalizing the Tielemans deal.
The new midfielder is expected to compete with Kobbie Mainoo in a number-eight role, while Santos is seen as a deeper-lying six. United are still likely to add at least one more midfielder with Champions League experience before the window closes.
