Chelsea Stalled in Pursuit of Pep Chavarria as Rayo Vallecano Holds Firm on €50m Release Clause

0
Chelsea’s summer spending plans have hit a snag as negotiations with Rayo Vallecano over left-back Pep Chavarria remain deadlocked. The Blues, who have already completed three senior signings this window, see the 28-year-old as the ideal replacement for the outgoing Marc Cucurella under new manager Xabi Alonso. However, Rayo have rejected an opening offer of around €18 million and are refusing to budge unless Chavarria’s €50 million release clause is triggered. Chelsea are prepared to improve their bid to £21.2 million (€25 million), but the Madrid-based club is under no financial pressure to sell. Chavarria still has four years left on his contract, and Rayo’s strong balance sheet — bolstered by a 25% tax liability on any transfer profit — means they can afford to play hardball, much like Spain’s traditional top three. Sources describe the talks as ‘complicated,’ though Chelsea hope the player’s desire to move will eventually force a compromise. For now, the two sides remain far apart, with the Blues weighing whether to meet the full release clause or walk away. Chavarria, who spent much of his early career in the Spanish second division, is rated highly by Alonso’s analytics staff, who see his output as comparable to Cucurella’s. That belief has driven Chelsea’s persistence, but it remains unclear whether the club will ultimately pay the premium Rayo demands.
