Alejandro Garnacho faces uncertain future as €50m Roma move stalls

0
Alejandro Garnacho’s stagnation at Chelsea appears to be reaching a tipping point. The 21-year-old Argentine, who joined the Blues from Manchester United last summer for €46.2 million, has been placed on the transfer list and relegated to the club’s “Bomb Squad” – meaning he will no longer train with the first team under head coach Xabi Alonso. Despite being one of the brightest prospects at Old Trafford not long ago, Garnacho’s first season at Stamford Bridge was underwhelming. Half of his eight goals came against lower-league sides in domestic cup competitions, and his overall play failed to convince. Chelsea are now willing to cut their losses, setting a €50 million price tag for a permanent transfer. AS Roma have emerged as the leading suitor, with Gian Piero Gasperini keen to reinforce his attack ahead of the Giallorossi’s return to the Champions League. However, Roma’s preference is a loan with an option to buy – a structure Chelsea have flatly rejected. According to insider, the player himself is open to the move. But even if a deal could be structured, data analytics firm SciSports raises doubts about the fit. Roma score just 68 on the Club Fit index, which measures playing time prospects, tactical suitability, and development opportunities. Other options also come with complications. Inter, with a Club Fit rating of 79, offer strong development potential and playing time, but Garnacho may not suit Cristian Chivu’s tactical setup. Manchester City look good tactically but would likely not guarantee him regular minutes. Borussia Dortmund could offer plenty of game time and have stylistic similarities, but like Roma, they cannot afford the €50 million fee – especially with their pursuit of Köln’s Said El Mala, also valued at €50 million, already stalled despite Karim Adeyemi’s impending sale to Barcelona. With few realistic escape routes, Garnacho might be forced to reconsider his position at Chelsea, which actually ranks as one of his better options with a Club Fit of 76. Whether he can convince Alonso to reintegrate him remains to be seen.
