Manchester United revive interest in Chelsea's Andrey Santos after Fernandes deal collapses
0
Manchester United have turned their attention back to Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos after missing out on their primary summer target, Mateus Fernandes.
Fernandes, 21, was a top priority for Old Trafford’s recruitment team, but they refused to match West Ham’s asking price. The Portuguese midfielder has since joined Tottenham Hotspur in a €99 million deal.
United’s list of alternatives includes Aurelien Tchouameni (Real Madrid), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), Carlos Baleba (Brighton), and Alex Scott (Bournemouth). However, according to The media, they are also pushing to secure Santos—a player they explored last summer.
The 22-year-old Brazilian is reportedly open to leaving Stamford Bridge due to increased competition for minutes. Chelsea are said to be willing to listen to offers, with a valuation around €58 million (£50m). Newcastle United are also monitoring the situation.
Santos, once described by Diego Moreira as “the best player in the world” during his Strasbourg loan, made 43 appearances for Chelsea last season, scoring three goals. His contract runs until 2030.
Would Santos be a good fit for United? He filled in admirably for Moises Caicedo at times last season and has obvious potential. But analytics from SciSports suggest he currently ranks below Manuel Ugarte, who struggled to cement a starting role at United. If the Red Devils can land him for a reasonable fee, he could develop into a long-term asset—but as a direct replacement for compatriot Casemiro, it might not be the safest bet.
