Chelsea Prodigy Jesse Derry Swarmed by Fans at Lisbon Airport Before Sporting Loan

Jesse Derry, Chelsea’s 19-year-old England youth international, was greeted by a crowd of supporters and journalists at Lisbon airport on Thursday evening as he arrived to finalize a season-long loan move to Sporting CP.
The teenager has just signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea, tying him to the club until 2032, and will spend the 2025-26 campaign in Portugal to get regular first-team minutes.
Derry made three senior appearances for Chelsea last term, including his first Premier League start against Nottingham Forest. At academy level, he registered 14 goal contributions in 25 matches across the UEFA Youth League and Premier League 2.
Despite being tipped for a role under new Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, with the club open to offers for Alejandro Garnacho, a full agreement was reached for Derry to join Sporting on loan. He will undergo a medical in Lisbon, and the move is expected to be made official before next week.
The Englishman becomes the first player in history to move directly from Chelsea to Sporting. Speaking after signing his new Chelsea contract, Derry said: “It’s a dream come true to commit my future to such a big club like Chelsea. I’m just so excited for what’s to come.”
Sporting are one of Portugal’s top sides, fighting for league titles and set to compete in the Champions League. The loan represents a major step up from academy football. However, questions remain over game time guarantees, though Chelsea and Sporting are believed to have a strong working relationship.
Derry showed promise in his Premier League debut and looks ready for senior football. If he becomes a regular in Lisbon, the move could be a masterstroke for all parties.
