Chelsea have moved quickly to secure the future of one of England’s most exciting young talents, finalising scholarship terms with 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli.
News of the agreement was broken by transfer insider insider, with the Blues acting decisively to fend off interest from a host of Europe’s top clubs. The attacking midfielder, already a regular in England’s youth setup and a familiar face around Chelsea’s first-team training ground, has turned down approaches from abroad to commit his immediate future to Stamford Bridge.
Nicoll-Jazuli is expected to sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 in January 2027. The strategy echoes Arsenal’s handling of Max Dowman last year, where the Gunners tied down their own teenage prodigy months before his 17th birthday to head off mounting transfer speculation.
Last season, the Sydney-born youngster made 35 appearances across Chelsea’s youth sides, scoring two goals and providing six assists. He has already drawn comparisons to Real Madrid and England superstar Jude Bellingham for his dynamic style from midfield, and even earned a “baller” endorsement from Chelsea first-team star Cole Palmer after becoming the youngest player ever to feature for the club in the UEFA Youth League against Benfica.
His international progression is equally striking. Nicoll-Jazuli scored for England’s U16s against Denmark last March while still only 15, and has since collected six caps for the U17s. He also contributed two assists in Chelsea’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Manchester City in the U18 Premier League title decider.
Eligible to represent Australia and France through his background, Nicoll-Jazuli has nonetheless committed to England’s pathway. With six appearances for the U21s already under his belt last term, the teenager is now primed to take on a more prominent role in 2026-27.
