Chelsea have opened preliminary discussions with AS Roma over a potential summer deal for midfielder Manu Kone, a player Manchester United had identified as their next priority target, according to reports from Italian outlet Corriere della Sera. Kone, a France international who helped Didier Deschamps' side reach the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, emerged on United's radar after Ederson's medical at Old Trafford fell through. The Red Devils had been poised to sign the Brazilian after the World Cup but pulled out of those negotiations, turning their attention toward the Roma midfielder. However, Chelsea have now entered the picture, with initial talks reportedly already held between the Blues and Roma officials. The Serie A club are currently deep in negotiations with Chelsea over a separate deal for winger Alejandro Garnacho, and the subject of Kone's availability was also raised during those conversations. A bid in the region of €50m is believed to be sufficient to secure the 25-year-old's signature, as Roma look to raise funds through a major sale. Chelsea's interest could accelerate quickly in the coming weeks, while United have yet to formalize their approach with an official offer. The Blues' pursuit of Kone comes amid significant uncertainty surrounding Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine midfielder is reportedly keen to explore his options after the World Cup, with Real Madrid his preferred destination, but Chelsea have slapped a €140m price tag on him — a figure that has deterred most suitors. Chelsea manager Alonso has publicly stated he wants to keep Fernandez at the club. "Yes, we have spoken but as you can understand what we have spoken remains private," Alonso said during his first press conference. When asked if he wants Fernandez to stay, he simply replied: "Yes." Fernandez still has six years left on his Stamford Bridge contract, and Chelsea's interest in Kone may be a direct consequence of their decision to sell Andrey Santos to Manchester United in a deal that could reach €58m with add-ons.
