Chelsea Spark 'Crisis' at Rayo Vallecano Over €50m Left-Back Chase
0
Chelsea have thrown Rayo Vallecano into a state of emergency with their pursuit of left-back Pep Chavarria, according to reports in Spain.
The Madrid-based club, which recently finished as runners-up in the Conference League after a loss to Crystal Palace, already saw head coach Inigo Perez depart for Villarreal. Now they face the prospect of losing another key piece — this time a defender who has become their only natural option on the left flank.
Rayo previously lost Fran Garcia to Real Madrid, and this summer they watched Alfonso “Pacha” Espino leave for Racing Club in Argentina. With Espino gone and Chavarria now being targeted by new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, the club is suddenly scrambling.
Chelsea have made two bids so far — one worth €9 million and another worth €15m — but Rayo have dug in their heels. The LaLiga side is demanding that the €50m release clause in Chavarria’s contract be triggered, as selling him would leave them without a single recognised left-back in the squad.
Sources indicate that Chavarria is open to the move and personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle. However, Rayo are refusing to budge until they secure a replacement, which has not yet materialised.
For now, the Blues face a choice: either increase their offer significantly or wait patiently until Rayo’s stance softens. The saga looks set to drag on.
