Chelsea ready to spoil Arsenal's William Saliba replacement plan

1
Chelsea are plotting a summer move for John Stones, potentially derailing Arsenal’s hopes of using the defender as cover for the injured William Saliba, according to sources close to the situation. insider sources reports that the Blues could bring in as many as two centre-backs before the 2026-27 campaign, depending on who leaves the club this summer. One name on their radar is Stones, who became a free agent after departing Manchester City. New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso is said to be eager to add experienced heads to a youthful squad ahead of his first season in charge. The 32-year-old Stones, with 257 Premier League appearances for City and Everton, certainly fits that description. He also featured five times for England at this summer’s World Cup, where the Three Lions reached the semifinals — their best tournament run since 1966. Arsenal had also been linked with Stones as a potential replacement for Saliba, whose back injury flared up during France’s World Cup semifinal loss to Spain last week. Surgery is reportedly being considered, which could sideline the French international for an extended period. Both insider sources and other outlets claim Arsenal admire Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, another England international. However, Villa’s €70 million (£60m) valuation of the 28-year-old has so far put off the Gunners. Konsa, a key figure in Unai Emery’s side, helped Villa win the Europa League last season — the club’s first European trophy since 1982. He has made 286 appearances for Villa, scoring 12 goals, and earned 28 England caps. Whether Chelsea’s interest in Stones pushes Arsenal to move for Konsa — or forces Villa to reconsider their asking price — remains to be seen.
