Jude Bellingham Silences Doubters with Stunning World Cup Performances for England
0
There was a time, not so long ago, when some questioned whether Jude Bellingham would even start for England at a World Cup. That debate now looks laughable.
The Real Madrid midfielder has been nothing short of sensational during England's run to the quarter-finals in the United States. With four goals and a beautifully weighted assist for Harry Kane in the 2-0 victory over Panama, Bellingham has emerged as one of the brightest stars of the tournament.
His technical brilliance, athleticism, and maturity have drawn praise from all corners. Bellingham, still only 23, seems unfazed by the adulation. It's familiar territory for a player who was earmarked for greatness from the moment he broke into Birmingham City's first team at 16 years and 38 days.
That debut in August 2019 made him the Blues' youngest ever player, breaking Trevor Francis' long-standing record. A Premier League scouting report from that match highlighted his “great athleticism, long legs, graceful running and work-rate” – but it was his ability to glide away from pressure and find space between the lines that truly stood out. The report recommended an immediate signing, a loan, and a senior squad place within 18 months.
Instead, Bellingham moved to Borussia Dortmund for £20.7m just a year later. Birmingham City retired his No. 22 shirt. Everyone in English football knew what was coming.
Dortmund saw it instantly: Bellingham scored on his debut. England manager Gareth Southgate soon followed, fast-tracking the 17-year-old into the senior squad for a late cameo against the Republic of Ireland in November 2020.
Southgate carefully managed his early international exposure, with assistant Steve Holland playing a crucial role in refining Bellingham's defensive game. But by the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the leash came off. Bellingham scored his first senior England goal in the 6-2 thrashing of Iran and has added nine more since.
At Euro 2024, he arrived as a fully fledged Galáctico, having scored 19 goals for Real Madrid on their way to La Liga and Champions League glory. His overhead kick equaliser against Slovakia in the last 16 was one of the tournament's defining moments. The 'who else' celebration became iconic.
Not everything has been smooth. There were raised eyebrows over his media duties and a documentary project, and he isolated himself after the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain. But on the pitch, Bellingham's impact is beyond debate.
Now, leading England's charge in the USA, he is proving once again why he is indispensable – not just to his country, but to the global game.
