Four England stars at risk of World Cup semi-final ban as yellow cards mount

England’s dramatic last-16 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium came at a cost. Thomas Tuchel’s side secured a 3-2 victory in one of their finest World Cup performances, but four key players now face the real possibility of missing a potential semi-final in Atlanta on July 15 due to the tournament’s strict yellow-card rules.
Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly and Declan Rice were all booked during the win. Rice saw yellow inside the first minute, while Manchester City pair Guehi and O’Reilly were cautioned after the interval. Jude Bellingham, who collected a booking in the previous round against DR Congo, is also walking the same line. Jordan Henderson was also cautioned late on against Mexico, but a wrist injury sustained while celebrating the win may require surgery, potentially ruling him out of the remainder of the tournament anyway.
Under the current regulations, yellow cards accumulated across the last-32, last-16, and quarter-final stages lead to an automatic one-match ban if a player receives two cautions. Those who already have one booking from the earlier rounds must avoid another in the quarter-final to stay available for the semi-final. Crucially, all yellow cards are reset after the quarter-finals, so only a red card in the semi-final would cause a player to miss the final.
It is not just England who are concerned. France trio Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Manu Kone were all booked in their last-16 victory over Paraguay. Spain’s Ferran Torres was cautioned deep into stoppage time against Portugal and will miss a potential semi-final if he is booked again against Belgium. Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi is among four players from his side at risk, while Argentina could be without Gonzalo Montiel in the final four. Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka is one of three players from his team walking the same tightrope after their shootout win over Colombia. England’s quarter-final opponents Norway would also be without winger Antonio Nusa in the semi-finals should he pick up another yellow.
The stakes are high, and one mistimed tackle could change a team’s World Cup fate.
