Joao Gomes on the verge of £38m Aston Villa move after Wolves exit

0
Joao Gomes is closing in on a £38m transfer to Aston Villa after Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League. The Brazilian midfielder has already left Wolves’ pre-season camp in Portugal and is scheduled for a medical on Thursday. The deal is structured with an initial £34m guaranteed and a further £4m in performance-related add-ons. Villa moved quickly to reinforce their midfield after selling Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35m and losing Amadou Onana for the rest of the year – the Belgian suffered a serious knee injury while on international duty at the World Cup. Aston Villa are also nearing the signature of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, a club-record deal worth in excess of £50m. Atletico Madrid had registered interest in Gomes but failed to push the move over the line. Gomes, who joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023, made 41 appearances last term as the club finished bottom of the table. In total he played 130 times for Wolves, scoring seven goals.
