Tottenham Complete Club-Record Signing of Sandro Tonali

0
Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a club-record fee that could reach £100 million. The 26-year-old Italy international moves to north London after three seasons with the Magpies. Spurs initially saw an £80m bid rejected but later agreed a deal worth an initial £92.5m plus £7.5m in performance-related add-ons. Tonali becomes the second high-profile addition after Mateus Fernandes, who joined from West Ham for £85m. "I'm very happy to be here," Tonali said. "People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one. I spoke to the head coach [Roberto de Zerbi] for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham." Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan for £55m in July 2023 but was soon handed a 10-month ban by the Italian Football Federation for breaching betting rules. After returning, he became a key player and helped the Magpies win the 2025 Carabao Cup – their first silverware in 70 years. In a farewell message, Tonali thanked manager Eddie Howe and the Newcastle supporters. Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi said: "He is a special player. I have followed him for a long time, since his days at Brescia. He was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham." The signing is part of a major squad overhaul after Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League last season. The club has also brought in defenders Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers, and could spend a combined £237m on Tonali, Fernandes, and centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke. Spurs' spending is enabled by the new squad-cost ratio rules and the increased revenue from their new stadium, which generated £126m in matchday income and £277m from commercial sources in 2024-25.
