England Face Heat Test in Miami Quarterfinal Against Norway – Are They Ready?

0
England’s World Cup quarterfinal against Norway in Miami on Saturday will be unlike anything they’ve faced so far in this tournament. The Three Lions have largely avoided extreme heat during their run to the last eight, playing multiple games in air-conditioned indoor stadiums or in cooler, damp conditions. That changes in South Florida, where the mercury could push 33°C (91°F) and feel like 41°C (106°F) with humidity. Norway, on the other hand, have played all but one of their matches outdoors. Their last-32 win over Ivory Coast was indoors in Dallas, but the rest – including a 2–1 victory over Brazil in New Jersey last Sunday – were played under open skies, with New Jersey under an extreme heat warning at the time. That experience could give them an edge when the whistle blows at the Hard Rock Stadium. The U.S. National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Miami area, and the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) – the index used by FIFA– is expected to hover around 28–30°C at kickoff. That is above the threshold Fifpro, the global players’ union, considers dangerous enough to call for a match delay or postponement. There is no indication the game will be called off, but the conditions will be punishing. England spent the early part of their U.S. stay in Florida, training in Tampa and Orlando before moving to a base in Kansas, where daily highs reach 32–34°C. Dr Lee Taylor, a heat and altitude expert from Loughborough University, told sources that those exposures should have acclimated the squad. “We’re fairly certain those players are acclimated,” he said. “They haven’t been able to really test that in a game environment, but we know they’ve acquired those physiological adaptations.” Norway, based in Greensboro, North Carolina, have experienced similar temperatures during training. Their pre-tournament warm-ups in Oslo and New Jersey were in cooler settings, but their recent outdoor matches in the heat may have given them a competitive edge. Saturday’s quarterfinal will be a true test of conditioning and mindset for both sides.
