Are Argentina Getting a Free Pass? Egypt Cry Foul After World Cup Exit
0
Argentina’s bid to defend their World Cup crown has been far from smooth, but questions are now being asked about whether they are getting a helping hand along the way.
After cruising past Cape Verde in the round of 16, La Albiceleste needed a dramatic comeback to beat Egypt 3-2, scoring the winner in stoppage time. Yet the manner of that victory has sparked a bitter row, with the Egyptian federation accusing match officials of bias and demanding they be removed from the tournament.
Egypt boss Hossam Hassan didn’t mince words. “We were treated unfairly. We suffered an injustice,” he said. “Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running.”
The complaints center on three key moments. Mostafa Zico had a brilliant goal ruled out after VAR spotted a Marwan Attia foul on Lisandro Martinez in the buildup. Egypt also felt Hamdi Fathy was held by Alexis Mac Allister and that Mohamed Salah was tripped by Julian Alvarez inside the box. Then, with the score tied at 2-2, Enzo Fernandez headed home the winner – a goal Egypt believe should have been disallowed, and a penalty awarded to them instead.
Controversial? Absolutely. But is it proof of a conspiracy? Hardly.
The perception issue worsened when FIFA appointed an all-Argentine officiating crew – led by Facundo Tello – for Thursday’s quarterfinal between France and Morocco. For the first time in this World Cup, an entire on-field team comes from the same nation, and that nation happens to be the defending champions’ home country. Tello has officiated high-profile knockout games before, but optics matter, and this one doesn’t look great.
Earlier in the tournament, Lionel Messi escaped a booking for a challenge on Algeria captain Aissa Mandi – a tackle similar to one that earned Folarin Balogun a straight red card against Bosnia. The United States are understood to have raised that discrepancy when fighting to overturn Balogun’s suspension. If Messi had been sent off, he would have missed the wins over Algeria and Austria.
Whether it’s coincidence or pattern, the spotlight is firmly on Argentina – and the officials around them.
