Craig Gordon hangs up his gloves: 'I've lived my dreams' as 25-year career ends

Craig Gordon has officially called time on his playing career, stepping away from football at the age of 43 after a quarter of a century in the game. The Scotland international, who made 84 appearances for his country, confirmed the decision in an emotional video released through his boyhood club, Heart of Midlothian.
"I've never wanted it to end, but end it must," Gordon said. "I have lived my dreams and for that, I'm so thankful."
Gordon's journey began at Tynecastle before a record-breaking move to Sunderland in 2007, where the Black Cats paid £9 million — the highest fee ever shelled out for a goalkeeper in British football at the time. He produced one of the Premier League's most iconic saves when he denied Bolton Wanderers' Zat Knight from close range in 2010.
A serious knee injury disrupted his spell at the Stadium of Light and, after five years, he spent two years out of the game rehabilitating and coaching. Gordon returned to action with Celtic in 2014, winning five league titles, two Scottish Cups and five League Cups. He then went back to Hearts in 2020, but a double leg break in 2022 threatened to end his career again. True to form, the veteran goalkeeper battled back to play once more.
Gordon's last match in a Scotland shirt came during a pre-World Cup friendly win over Curacao in May, and his final Hearts appearance was a 2-2 draw with his old club Celtic in January. In total, he played 766 first-team games, including a loan spell at Cowdenbeath in 2001-02, and kept 30 clean sheets for his country.
"Everyone has dreams," Gordon added. "Mine were probably no different to most kids — play for my club and my country. Heart of Midlothian and Scotland. Improbable? Perhaps. Impossible? Absolutely not."
He is expected to say goodbye to the Hearts support during Friday's friendly against Rayo Vallecano at Tynecastle. "But now the gloves are finally off and I bid farewell to my playing career," he said. "You, the fans, have given me everything, and it has been a privilege to represent you. I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have."
