England survive Azteca nightmare and beat Mexico, but Henderson’s World Cup is over after bizarre celebration injury

England produced one of their most famous World Cup performances by silencing the Azteca Stadium and knocking out Mexico 3-2 to reach the quarterfinals, but the victory came at a heavy cost as Jordan Henderson suffered a serious wrist injury during the wild celebrations and is now expected to miss the rest of the tournament. Jude Bellingham was the hero for the Three Lions, scoring twice to put Thomas Tuchel’s side in control. Harry Kane added a third from the penalty spot, but Mexico refused to go away. A second-half red card for Jarell Quansah turned the momentum, and Raúl Jiménez converted a 69th-minute penalty to cut the deficit to one, setting up a tense finale. England held on, however, and booked a quarterfinal date with Norway, who earlier stunned Brazil 2-1 thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland. The full-time whistle sparked euphoric scenes among the England players and staff. Henderson sprinted onto the pitch to join the celebrations, but his night took a painful turn. As he jumped over an advertising hoarding, he lost his balance and landed awkwardly, his arm folding beneath him. Medical staff rushed onto the field, and the veteran midfielder was stretchered off while receiving oxygen. “Mixed feelings because I am exhausted, of course, and emotional but also sad because Jordan got injured,” Tuchel said after the match. “He injured his wrist. He is at the moment at the hospital, so it is quite a serious injury. It just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us.” Henderson did not travel back with the squad and spent the night at a hospital in Mexico City. The injury is a devastating blow for a player who had been a controversial selection in Tuchel’s squad but had become an important leader on and off the pitch.
