Anthony Gordon transfer bombshell: Barcelona's real cost hits €104m after massive agent fees

Barcelona’s summer signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United has sparked a fresh controversy in Spain after it emerged the total outlay for the winger is far higher than the widely reported €80 million fee.
According to Catalan radio station RAC 1 and Spanish outlet La Razon, which consulted financial analysts Futbolfinanzas, the club paid an eye-watering €24 million in agent commissions on the deal. That figure alone represents roughly 34 percent of the overall transfer cost — a percentage that experts describe as unusually high even in today’s inflated market.
When the commission is added to the base fee, the total package jumps to €104 million, and that sum does not include Gordon’s wages over his five-year contract. Agent fees are not amortized like transfer fees, meaning Barcelona will pay more in the first year to intermediaries (€24m) than to the player himself (€16m).
The revelation comes at a time when Barcelona’s finances remain under close scrutiny. The club had only recently returned to La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule, enabling them to make a splash in the market. Gordon’s move initially stunned observers because it seemed to come out of nowhere, with Bayern Munich having balked at Newcastle’s asking price earlier in the window.
To date, Gordon’s transfer stands as the third-largest of the European summer, behind Tottenham’s €99m capture of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes and Manchester City’s club-record €135m deal for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. Barcelona themselves have since failed with a €100m bid for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, whose €500m release clause remains a non-starter.
The pressure on Gordon, 25, to justify that cost now mounts significantly. The England international will have to deliver immediately at the Camp Nou, with every flash of his pace and trickery measured against a price tag that keeps growing.
