Gilberto Mora Set for Premier League Move After World Cup Breakout
0
Mexico’s teenage sensation Gilberto Mora is on the verge of a blockbuster move to the Premier League, with several of Europe’s biggest clubs preparing to trigger his exit clause.
The 17-year-old playmaker has taken the World Cup by storm, most recently dazzling in Mexico’s round-of-32 victory over Ecuador. The youngest player at the tournament, Mora was a constant threat before being substituted just before the hour mark after visibly tiring.
Head coach Javier Aguirre has handled Mora with care, using him as a substitute in the group-stage opener against South Africa and leaving him on the bench versus South Korea. But the teenager earned a full debut against Czechia and kept his place against Ecuador, justifying the faith with a performance that had scouts flooding to their notepads.
Mora became a regular for Mexico at 16 and helped them win last year’s Gold Cup. Only minor injury issues have slowed him since, but his trajectory points toward stardom — perhaps the finest talent Mexico has produced in a generation.
Now a move to Europe looks inevitable. Tijuana recently handed Mora a historic contract — negotiated by superagent Rafaela Pimenta and described as the biggest in the club’s history — which includes a flexible exit mechanism. According to TNT Sports Mexico journalist Rodrigo Lara, the midfielder will be playing in England by January.
“In six months, during the winter transfer window, Gilberto Mora is going to take off. He’s going to compete. He will be a Premier League player,” Lara said after Mexico’s win over Ecuador. “I can’t say which team yet, but after the England game things will move forward.”
Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, well connected to Pimenta’s client network, reports that Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool are all vying for his signature. Barcelona and Real Madrid have also been linked over the past year.
Despite the hype, some question whether jumping straight into England’s physical league is wise. The 5ft 6in Mora faded against Ecuador, running out of steam after an hour — a reminder of his ongoing physical development.
“It’s a shame he lost his strength, but he is still just a child and has shown tremendous courage,” Aguirre said. A move to Europe is certain. The only question is when — and whether patience might serve him better than a straight sprint to the top.
