World Cup 2026 Sets Record With 13 Own Goals
0
The 2026 World Cup has already carved its name into the history books, and not just for the quality of play. The tournament has seen 13 own goals so far – a new record for a single edition.
The latest unfortunate moment came in the Round of 32 clash between Egypt and Australia. Egypt’s right-back Mohamed Hany, attempting to clear a cross into the box, headed the ball into his own net, leveling the score at 1-1.
The 30-year-old Al Ahly defender became the 13th player to score an own goal at this World Cup. The previous record of 12 own goals was set at the 2018 tournament in Russia. The 2026 edition, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, broke that mark before the group stage had even finished.
