Blatter Slams FIFA Over Balogun Red Card Reversal: 'Red Cards Are Not Canceled by Political Phone Calls'

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has strongly criticized the organization’s decision to rescind a one-match suspension for United States striker Folarin Balogun, warning that political interference is undermining the integrity of football officiating.
“Red cards are not canceled by political phone calls. If we start making decisions under pressure, we lose trust in refereeing,” Blatter told Swiss media.
The controversy stems from Balogun’s straight red card in a friendly against Slovenia. FIFA initially imposed an automatic one-game ban, but later overturned it — a move that drew sharp rebuke from the 88-year-old Swiss, who ran world football from 1998 to 2015.
Blatter argued that such precedents damage the credibility of disciplinary procedures and create a dangerous double standard.
“Football must apply the same rules for everyone — regardless of which country a player comes from or how big his name is. Otherwise we risk turning the game into a political tool,” he said.
The reversal has sparked broader debate about consistency in FIFA’s disciplinary process, with Blatter’s comments adding weight to claims that outside influence played a role.
